Short weeks are mindscrew, aren’t they? If you’re off on Monday then you’re usually a day behind for the rest of the week. If it’s Friday you’re a day ahead out of sheer anticipation. If it’s in the middle of the week, then it’s like you’ve got two separate short weeks. It’s all too much. But I’ll tell you the real ugly depressing truth about short work weeks: they’re still too long. This is just about the time of year when burnout starts to set in, especially if June rolls around and, like me, you realize you haven’t taken a single day off this whole year. By comparison, by this time last year I’d taken two separate weeklong vacations by this time. Not coincidentally, by this time last year, rather than feeling the hot breath of impending burnout on the back of my neck, I was cool, relaxed, and ready for summer.

I guess what I’m saying is don’t work too hard. Remember to live too.
